Certified Medication Technician (CMT) Job Description
Position Authority and Accountability: The Certified Medication Aide administers oral, and topical and rectal medications to residents, as ordered by a physician, in accordance with state and federal rules and regulations. The medication aide will operate within the constraints of established policy and procedures consistent with accepted/allowed standards of practice relevant to certification. Training/Education/Licensure/Skills or Proficiency Requirements: Current, valid certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant in the State of Iowa. As evidenced by listing on Iowa's Nurse Aide Registry or documentation of successful completion of competency and skills tests from an approved testing agency. Current, valid certification as a Medication Aide in the State of Iowa. Functional literacy in written and spoken English. Demonstrated effective communication. General Functions: Accepts assigned duties, instructions, or correction in a cooperative manner, voicing concerns or disagreement in a professional manner through established chain of command. Assumes accountability for compliance with Federal, State and other regulations within scope of control and of which they have been informed. Observes safety hazards and emergency situations, and reports to appropriate person or takes corrective action according to establish procedures, works safely without danger to self or others. Comes to work as scheduled and consistently demonstrates dependability and punctuality, complies with attendance policies. Assumes accountability for information in personnel policies. Reports for work with clean, neat uniform and personal appearance, consistently presents a professional image. Maintains confidentiality of resident, employee and facility information. Participates in in-service training programs and completes assignments and return demonstrations as required. Assumes accountability for using, maintaining and storing facility property according to established policy. Adheres to and enforces facility policies and procedures including but not limited to infection control, safety, residents rights, and chain of command and authority. Performs incidental housekeeping and maintenance tasks as may arise during the course of regular duties, in order to maintain a clean, safe, pleasant environment for residents, visitors and staff. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor. Resident Care and Service: Administers medications under the supervision of a licensed nurse as ordered by a physician, in accordance with state and federal regulations and consistent with facility policy. Administers PRN medications in accordance with state and federal regulations and consistent with facility policies; Documenting the reason and response to such medications in a timely manner. Records the administration of medications in accordance with regulations/rules and facility policy. Assures protocol of “Five Rights” is followed in the administration of medications, with error rates within acceptable limits. Takes and records vital signs of residents as assigned or as maybe relevant to certain medications. Observes and reports to a licensed nurse in a timely manner any reactions and/or side effects of medications. Accounts for narcotics in accordance with policies and procedure in compliance with all appropriate rules/regulations. Assists in the implementation of each residents care plan by performing personal cares (i.e.: dressing, feeding, toileting, grooming) to assigned residents according to their care plans and daily schedules of care. This care will be provided in such a way as to promote safety, comfort, security and the greatest degree on independence possible.
