This facility is a joke. I’m in my late 60’s and I spent three weeks here after ankle surgery. The management is horrible. One week into my stay they called a meeting with family and including me seemed to be an after thought. I told them that I should be the first point of contact. Good luck future patients. Anyway, after the meeting management was left with a short to do list and NOTHING was done during my stay. I found it hard to reach someone within the facility and began to call the main desk to reach the staff. Calls weren’t returned and requests I made from nursing could take hours. Menus are ridiculous! They clearly state that meals include fresh fruit. I NEVER was served fresh fruit. Just canned or frozen crap that was hit or miss. Patients received a weekly menu which wasn’t consistent and for example the “chocolate mouse parfait” turned out to be the standard fare of chocolate pudding. Same with vegetables. Never fresh, always canned with no flavor. Upon release I was told I would receive 30 days of meds. Not true. I I only received a 15 day prescription and the PAIN MEDICATION I needed was never filled or followed up on even though I called the facility asking for help. I made it clear that I was unhappy upon release and one of the managers perked up for a day and never followed up on the things she promised to do. By the way, the CNA’s keep this place going. Always helpful and attentive. Like usual, the ones who do the work are probably paid the least, I also needed home assistance that they were supposed to coordinate. That too didn’t happen and I ended up making the phone calls myself. In addition they never ordered the home equipment I needed and I had to find someone who could help me. My best wishes to anyone who is staying at Empress. I found it to be a horrible experience.

I had quite a mixed experience here. Some of the staff were very kind and caring. I'm talking about the nurses, Megan, Benson and Danielle, in particular, and many of the CNAs, Jose in particular. I would like to offer a special thank you to Emily, the voice specialist, who spent a great deal of time listening to my concerns and trying to help me with them. I felt that Normam and Teresa, the social worker, were also helpful. Other staff members, in particular the nurse, Tammy, were cold and I wondered how good their care really was. I was never told how to administer the meds to myself through my feeding tube and since it was Tammy's shift when I left, I wondered if she was the one who should have taught me how to do that. She also seemed to be pointedly ignoring me, not even saying goodbye as I walked past her down the hall to leave although she had taken care of me perhaps around two dozen times during my stay. Also I was told that home health care would be arranged for me, and since no one told me that it had been done when I left, I assume that it hadn't. Addionally, the nursing staff was always half doing whatever it was they needed to do with me and then running off to do something else and I was never sure how long it would take for them to return, although it was often around 40 minutes Several times I was brought trays of food and had to tell the staff delivering it that I wasn't eating through my mouth but only through a g-tube in my stomach and I wondered why they had not been briefed about that. When I had a roommate who insisted on having her TV on 24/7 and also the overhead light on all night, initially I was told that I could not switch rooms but finally they relented (I think because some of the nurses spoke up for me) and I was able to switch. I think that many of the problems I've described have to do with there simply not being enough staff to adequately take care of all the patients.

This place is really dysfunctional. My mom's discharge was a complete joke. She was sent home without home health in place and not sufficiently taught how to feed herself through her g-tube🤦‍♂️. In all fairness, some of staff are nice..this place is just the epitome of a dysfunctional Medicare facility.
