To say that our experience at Sunrise Senior Living of Bon Air was a disappointment would be a gross understatement and if I could provide a zero rating for this facility I would; however, I do have to acknowledge the handful of people there that are truly caring and try their best to work in a system that doesn't support them. Devonte, Reilly, Keona, James, Judy and the medtechs of the Reminiscence Building are genuinely good people and will show patience and concern for your loved one, but outside of that group, the care there is minimal at best. Our father, who has dementia, resided at Sunrise for 8 months and declined significantly while at this facility. Sunrise will promise you the world when you first come to speak to their sales person ( dedicated care, hourly checks day and night, individualized laundry services, outings/varied interactive activities), none of which is actually the case. They are understaffed in memory care and a large portion of the caregivers employed in that section are only there for the paycheck. They also tend to "borrow" supplies that you personally purchase for your loved one without replacing them. When your loved one becomes more than they want to bother with, they will either place them in a more expensive "higher level of care", which is billed for, but not actually provided, or they will force additional outside care at your expense, while still billing the $10K/month that it costs to reside there. The situation with our father reached a point where we did contact Adult Protective Services and request the assistance of our local ombudsman to resolve various issues. The facility management shows little concern unless they're called to the carpet and corporate billing is the worst. They will nickel and dime you for every little thing, but are very slow to credit any charges due back to you. We removed our father from this facility on Oct 11th after the required 30-day notice and not only are they still trying to bill for the remainder of that month, but we're also getting bills and collection letters for November. Removing our father from this facility was the best decision we ever made and he's now calm, happy and in good health being cared for at home by those that love him. If you chose to bring your loved one here, read their contract carefully, document every conversation in writing and be careful what you sign!
Our family’s experience with Sunrise at Bon Air (Dementia Care) has been profoundly distressing. We entrusted them with the care of my father, who has dementia, expecting compassion, professionalism, and genuine care. However, from the outset, the facility’s promises were, in our experience, unfulfilled. During the initial assessment, staff members confidently provided assurances of individualized attention, meaningful activities, and consistent patient care. Regrettably, in our experience, these promises were not met. While a few staff members exhibited kindness and compassion, we often observed that others were inattentive, and care sometimes felt neglectful or inconsistent. My father was rarely engaged, despite the fact that dementia patients benefit from stimulation and interaction. He often spent extended periods alone, which caused our family concern for his safety and well-being. The facility’s lack of accountability and oversight was particularly concerning in our experience. My mother stayed in his apartment to ensure his care on one occasion, and the following night, my sister did the same. At one point, my mother needed assistance but we did not observe staff present on duty. Based on what we witnessed, this posed a risk to my father’s safety. From our perspective, round-the-clock checks did not always appear to be consistently conducted, and without family being present, we could not be confident that responsibilities were fully met. A member of family was present every other day for 8 months at this facility to visit my dad. In our experience, the facility did not consistently provide meaningful activities, one-on-one attention, or the basic services my mother had paid for. Furthermore, we felt that dignity and basic human rights for my father were ignored. The quality of care led us to involve APS (Adult Protective Services) and an ombudsman to ensure my father’s well-being. We ultimately chose to remove him from the facility due to what we experienced as numerous shortcomings. I am deeply angered and frustrated that a facility could charge families significant amounts while providing care that, in our experience, fell short of expectations. The elderly deserve dignity, patience, and respect. My father deserved attention, kindness, and safety. Instead, in our experience, he received neglect, indifference, and unfulfilled promises. If you are considering Sunrise at Bon Air, I strongly advise you to explore alternative options. This facility, in our experience, does not meet the standard of care families deserve. Families and their loved ones deserve genuine care, not neglect or broken promises. NEVER, EVER be afraid to advocate for your loved one and report anything that seems wrong or unsafe!! Your voice may be the only voice your loved one has. This is only a brief summary of our experience as a family with this facility, shortened due to word count limits. We removed my father from this facility after eight months, and he is now thriving and showing none of the decline we observed while he was a resident at Sunrise.
Where to start. They nickel and dime you on everything. I was charged for two days of medicine for my mom when she wasn't there. Apparently they need two days notice yet they are the ones who sent her to the hospital (so knew she wasnt there!) so that was $70. After she passed I was charged $125 for a day because there was an oxygen tank still in the room which hospice picked up that day at 1pm. God forbid they move it out.
My Aunt has been living at Sunrise Bon Air for 2 years and is very happy. Staff is always very helpful and thoughtful while the facility is clean and welcoming. You feel like you’re on a cruise ship with all the activities offered and the delicious food. I would recommend Sun Rise to others looking.
Sunrise at BonAir has been a great place for my mother. When I first visited, the energy of the place and the people drew me in. My mother has been well taken care of and seems happy. Those were the 2 things I was looking for. I needed to feel like I could leave her and she would be fine. There have been no major issues and I am very confident that I made the right decision for our family.
