I wasn't going to go into detail but to my surprise, they looked through their patients, cross-referencing my last name and called my mother to push for details. I do not appreciate this. - No roommate (which was good) but I went to sit in the other chair in the room but it had a red-brown stain on the seat that appeared like a bloodstain. - Could be a patient's condition but every other time I walked down the hall I heard someone screaming, "help me! someone help me!". If this is a special case, a note on the outside of the room may put people at ease. - Some patients/residents (unsure which) were left in a wheelchair in the middle of the hallway unattended. Perhaps just for a few minutes, I am not sure but I felt this was a safety/fire hazard. - Strong odor in hallway. Could be something that cannot be helped, but I have visited many such facilities before and this was a first. - Room run down, old peeling furniture. I fixed the curtains because they were not hung up properly. I get people are busy, but no bonus for facilities. - Staff appeared generally apathetic. I do not blame them as it's a tough job, but no bonus for friendliness. There are many wings/sections of this place and I only saw one. Perhaps the others are better. I visited approximately 12-15 times over the course of 2 weeks. This is just my perception and opinion based on comparison with other similar facilities that I have seen.
Horrible facility overall. A few of the staff are kind, caring, but majority could care less about the residents. Constantly missing cellphone chargers, failure by staff to charge hearing aids for clients. Facility very rundown and in disrepair. Yes, I'll be transferring my parent out ASAP.
Grand Islander has been a very wonderful experience for me! Every department has excelled in their performance, from admissions all the way to housekeeping and in between! Thank you admissions director for acknowledging me daily not just at admission! These nurses are amazing! Thank you therapy for all of our sessions that gave me all of these blessings to get the chance to return home! Even maintenance always accommodated my every request! From the moment I was on the Transitional care unit to then being on the longterm care unit for some time I have been very happy with my treatment. I went through some very difficult transitions and everyone was there to help me every step of the way! I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Grand Islander for rehab services and long term care! My meals were always excellent and I praise the kitchen for always making accommodations! Recreation encouraged me every single day to participate and I enjoyed every single part that they have played in my journey! I had a very special care team, and they know who they all are! You All meant the world to me and I will never forget you and the difference you’ve made in my life! Today I get to return to my home after a very lengthy stay!! Thank you isn’t enough for this facility!
I have had three family members who have been cared for by the wonderful staff at the Grand Islander. Most recent has been my Mom. When she was first moved there from my home she was not happy and wanted to know when she would be going home. Very hard to hear and harder to tell her that she was in her new home. Sometimes she was agitated and angry with me. Over time due to the care and kindness she has adopted her new home and seems content. I know as her former life further slips away and when she no longer knows who I am it will become so much harder for me. But I know with the knowledgeable staff I feel she is where she will get the care and understanding that she needs. From the moment you step in the front and are greeted by “Mary” you know that you have made the right choice in choosing the Grand Islander for your loved one. Thank you all so much! I believe my friend who is there was being well taken care of.I do wonder if the staff is being over worked with the ratio of caregivers to residents.
