Avalon Health and Rehabilitation is a small, friendly facility that accepts Medicaid. Most of the staff are genuinely kind and caring — they take time to get to know the residents and make sure they feel comfortable and cared for. You can really tell they love what they do. I visit on a daily basis and have great interactions with the team. The building itself is older, but it’s kept very clean. The rooms are small but have everything the residents need. The dining room is bright and inviting. It serves multiple purposes — meals, social time, and daily activities all happen there. There’s also a large TV in the dining room that residents enjoy. For the most part the food served is pretty good. Residents have the option to eat in their rooms if desired. Avalon offers a nice variety of activities each day, including arts and crafts, bingo, music, exercise, and Bible study, which help keep residents active and engaged. There is an onsite hair salon. An interesting fact is the movie Fried Green Tomatoes was filmed there. Overall, Avalon Health and Rehabilitation may not be the newest facility, but it’s a warm, caring place with dedicated staff and a genuine community feel.
My grandmother was in rehab for two and a half weeks. The staff took good care of her and when she came home she was doing so much better. The routine for medicine delivery was very efficient.
I was unable to place my husband here due to his medical situation but Amanda was wonderful and she went above and beyond to help me find a place.
We were pretty upset when we first arrived at Avalon because It turned out to be primarily a nursing home not the rehab resource we needed - we thought. Our 99 yr old mother was ordered into rehab after a minor stroke last month so Avalon was a shocker to us! It took a couple of days for us to see this diamond in the rough. It is clean, the food is pretty good but most of all the everyday staff is exceptional and the rehab specialists were wonderful. Patient, caring, helpful to the family and to the patient. Yes, it is an older nursing home with old cheap blinds, needs a new coat of paint, rooms are very small with miss-matched furniture and it has many patients, some very helpless, in wheelchairs in the halls during the day but don't judge this book by its cover. I gave it 4 stars, not 5 because the management was less than friendly and hardly ever seen. The staff is what counts and they carried the day. A special thanks to Jemeka!
My mom was a resident at Avalon for 14 months. During that time, the staff was caring, responsive, and dedicated to her care. It was a good partnership between the staff and our family. As my mom declined, the staff was always there for us to answer all our questions, help us with difficult decisions, and to hug us when we needed it. There were of course some bumps in the road but they were always addressed. I highly recommend Avalon!! If you would like to talk about our experience, please contact Miriam Deberry, the center director, for my contact information.
